A kid that stutters

"When I Stutter" a story by Blake, age 8 When I stutter, sometimes I feel upset and sad. I usually don't like it because it hurts my feelings a lot. I don't want to talk in front of my class because I'm afraid that I might stutter. Even if someone teases me, I just ignore them. If I do stutter, I need to stretch my words out and take my time. My speech helpers sometimes make me stutter a lot. It's very hard to talk right when you're stuttering. Sometimes my mom helps me talk. She tells me to stretch my words out just like at Speech. It makes me feel better. added March 24, 1999 --------------------------------------- My thoughts a year later by Blake, age 9 When I stutter sometimes I do not feel well but sometimes I get upset and sometimes I play basketball to make myself feel better but sometimes I feel better. Sometimes I go to speech. And they teach me how to use my easy speaking voice. I use light touch to make my speech feel better. And sometimes Jane and I go play basketball. We choose three things. And those are hard touch, light touch, and sliding. One time Lynne and I beat my speech teacher in basketball. Sometimes you get candy if you win. You get a point for stuttering and points for baskets. One time I beat my dad in stuttering and the score was 111 to 61. One time I beat a college student. His name was Paul. He stutters too. Paul lost the round against me. And we stuttered and we played basketball, too. It was neat seeing another person stuttering. You should try it too, if you want. added April 20, 2000

Ra-1,

Any sport activity takes you energy to breathing, Basket ball is running and throwing; you can imagine how hard you could speak while playing basket ball.

It helps make your breathing better, which sometimes help you control your speech.

TF, I read your first post in your blog long time ago, and I was wondering.. there is nothing wrong with stuttering, but isn't it something that can be fixed or to put it correctly, enhance the speaking style?
I remember reading many ads in the newspaper regarding such issue, like a specialist who can minimize/eliminate the stuttering with some techniques. Have you thought of that? Again, there is nothing wrong with stuttering, but if its something that can be sorted out, then why don't you do it?

Bo rashed I'm not talking about therapy !! You go to a therapist when you have something wrong on ur mind like a physiological issue or something. What I'm talking about are some centers that help you in the pronunciation aspect تحسين عملية النطق .
Science is changing and scientists are discovering new issues everyday & maybe that stuttering issue true faith is having is something that can be sorted in one of those pronunciation enhancement centers I'm talking about.
Its true, there is absolutely nothing wrong with stuttering, however, if it something that can be reduced or might even be eliminated, then why not try. And again, I'm not talking about therapy!

Bo rashed, I agree with you that sometimes we should let things be like they are, but & after reading couple of true faith’s posts (such as “What is a bad day?” post) I had a feeling that she is annoyed of that stuttering issue. I also was surprised when she said she went on therapy for that coz I couldn’t accept the fact that stuttering needs a therapist so it would be sorted out. All I’m saying, that if there was an easy way from one of those pronunciation enhancement centers, & if she could allocate someone who has been to one of those centers so she would have some feedback from them, then why not try it?
True faith, I’m sorry if I was interfering in something that clearly concerns you alone & you might not feel comfortable having me discussing such issue. Its just a thought I had on my mind & I’ll stop talking/posting about it if you want me to.

Bo ghazi,

Thank you for you advice.

I tried all kinds of treatment in UK and in Kuwait; sometimes it works for some days and sometimes it get worse.

I don’t want to get rid of it; it became a part of my life and personality. But I want to know what is it; because no body knows.

I have been searching in stuttering for years; and I have many stuttering email friends around the world.
There are many people who have PHD in stuttering treatments; but they don’t know what is stuttering, they only have different theories. There is no solution for it.

Thank you again

Bo Rashed,

You are right ignoring is the best solution.

But in my bad days; it is really hard to ignore.

bo rashed,

I recommend that you read "Understanding and Controlling Stuttering: A Comprehensive New Approach Based on the Valsalva Hypothesis" by William D. Parry

The first chapter explains how stutterers really feel.
And you will know how stuttering is different then any other thing.

You can find it at www.amazon.com
