Specialization

Specialization is a thing that we lack in Kuwait. You could see a guy who graduated from college as an engineer and now is an NLP trainer. Another one with a law degree that wants to be a financial analysis. An accountant that wants to be a teacher. What is wrong with people here? It’s not just few of them, it is the majority. Many people that I have met in the past two years are shifting from a career to another, they get bored from the first one so they take training courses in another one and suddenly they are experts in that. Specialization is a certain need; no development could exist with out it. This country needs more than people making money for them selves.

it's so true and serious, and not only in working field, in every field! it's commen that people do not recognize what they want until it's too late to act on it! you go to any college you get accepted in, or go for what parents want you to! and then when you suck at it because you realize it's not what you really want! I hate that :(

In my humble opinion. I have two reasons that came to mind.. and that is from experience as well, since I studied something, and doing something else..

1- it is not easy as a teenager (17 or barley 18) to actually find what you want to do in life for a fact.. it’s always the direction that your parents want to see you do in the future, people going to college to study something that their father dreamed his son/daughter would be doing. Lawyer, doctor, or take care of the family business (not mafia hehehe) by wanting the son/daughter to be in the business industry.. I am not saying all but seriously, I remember majoring in science and math in high school, only to realize that I hate it so much, but it’s very prestigious to have that as a major.. so I went with it, in college, of course I had no choice other than go with engineering and medicine majors, hell this is what people do when they have science and math degree from college.. not really thinking of what I really want.. I had to shift from one major to completely different one, I went from radiology, to business school (hospitality management) believe it or not.. after 4 years of college my persona started to emerge, and I started to form my own interesst in life, knowing a little bit of what I want to be involved in, thankfully my major is in business school, so I went and pushed for more finance and management classes.. when I came to Kuwait, I tried the career in Hospitality management, but my heart was in finance.. should it be too late to go with what my heart wanted? I have the back ground and the structure + many condenced capital market and portfolio management course.. So I went with it.. and now I am doing better than ever.. I have my own department that I created from scratch, and living happy with what I do..

2- second reason, sometimes the person doesn’t have allot to say when it comes to working, for instance my sis was waiting for a whole year refusing to work in something other than her exact field, and no one wanted to take her because she had no experience, so she settled for something else, other than what she studied.. sometimes the person have to do what they have to do.. even if it wasn’t what they want.. life is not always fair.. :)

Very valid point Valiant Contender, let's say your heart was set as a 17 year old to be a singer True Faith, the chances are very slim that you would be pursuing it, you would not be allowed to go with what you want to do.. (that’s only an example, and not limited to)

Good points I have read from you guys.

What really made me write this post is the “habba” thing in Kuwait; and the searching for identity by changing careers.
